Double Major Olin Marman Attends IDDEAS

June 24, 2019

Olin Marman, is an active Honors College student and is both a double degree and a double major seeking student at UA.  Olin is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in EWRE & ABEM, he is also seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.  This past Spring Olin applied to and was selected for The Wharton School IDDEAS program at The University of Pennsylvania.  IDDEAS stands for Introduction to Diversity in Doctoral Education and Scholarship.  From their website (https://doctoral.wharton.upenn.edu/iddeas/) "The IDDEAS Program creates a scholarly community for undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and experiences who can benefit from Wharton's outstanding faculty and resources."  We asked Olin what his takeaways from the program were and his experience, he provided the following:

"The IDDEAS program was designed to introduce a wide variety of undergraduate students to the possibility of studying a business discipline (not just economics) at a Phd level. While it was a bit intimidating to be at the heart of one of the most prestigious institutions conversing with some incredibly smart people, the staff and faculty at Wharton were warm and welcoming in every way. The program gave participants a hands-on experience of what business Phd level research is like by pairing participants with a Wharton Phd student in a matching field. I spent an afternoon with an economics candidate researching the long term developmental effects of city segregation in Baltimore. Overall, the experience was both enlightening and inspiring. I would highly recommend any interested students apply, this program has greatly influenced what I plan to do following graduation!"

AREC applauds Olin on not only his efforts in applying for the program, but also for being one of a small select group of students from across the United States to participate in this program.  His participation puts UA on the short list of schools represented in the IDDEAS program.  Great work, Olin!
