Agriculture & Water
Agriculture has long been an important part of Arizona’s economy. Historically, the “five Cs” — cattle, citrus, climate, copper, and cotton — were used to characterize the state’s major industries. While the state economy has diversified over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first century, agriculture remains an important economic activity in many Arizona communities. The Extension Regional Economic Analysis Program (EREAP) conducts research related to agriculture and agribusiness’s role within the state and local economies. Finally, as agriculture accounts for approximately ¾ of Arizona’s total water use, many studies examine the intersection of agricultural water use, agricultural production, and economic activity in the broader community.
